Traveling With Kids

There are few activities that bond a family together more successfully than a good vacation. For parents leaving behind the pressures of home and business life, and for the kids the exciting anticipation of new places and adventures to experience, all come together to create one of life's most enriching experiences.

The family holiday creates life-long memories for everyone. Going back over the old photographs later and reliving the highlights at family gatherings brings the entire family into a common space that is uplifting for everyone.

There are many things parents need to consider when plans are being made for the vacation. The ages of the children, mode of travel, suitable clothing for the destination, 'fill-in' activities to keep the kids happy during stop-overs on long journeys and more.

Sending unaccompanied children off to visit distant relatives requires very careful thought and planning. Airlines, bus and rail operators have very strict regulations which must be complied with so don't leave that to the last minute. But for the traditional family vacation common sense must always be your guide.

For instance it doesn’t make a lot of sense to plan a three week round the world trip with a one year old infant in your arms. A trip like that would certainly not be relaxing and there would be far easier and more enjoyable alternatives. So keep the planning compatible with the tolerance level of the children.

Be prepared for the most common setback for younger travelers. Motion sickness is a very common disturbance of the inner ear associated with our sense of balance and can affect us no matter what mode of transport we use. It is distressing not only for the patient but for the rest of the group as well.

There are things you can do to prevent or at least minimize that risk. At all cost avoid carbonated drinks loaded with sugar and artificial coloring. These are almost guaranteed to reappear in a less appealing form as the journey progresses especially if combined with high-fat content take-aways. A great alternative is to pack healthy snacks like dried fruit, shelled walnuts and a variety of other 'natural' products from a health food store which will cut down that risk. Take bottled water along to keep fluid intake up. A squeeze of lemon or lime juice in the bottle makes a refreshing drink. Take plenty of face and hand wipes with a little cologne to freshen up along the way.

Keep the kids busy by having them maintain a sketchbook and journal of the trip with activities and sketches relating to the places visited. This will bring back memories of the trip for years to come. A good activity is to have them mail a postcard to themselves from interesting stop-overs that will be waiting for them when they get back home. Take along easily packed travel games from the huge selection available on the market. It's a good plan to get the young ones to help you prepare a list of a few favorites before leaving.

If you are traveling internationally make sure to have everyone checked-out by the family physician to make sure that all health requirements and vaccinations are up to date.

Wherever you decide to take your family holiday keep your planning compatible with the age of your children. The younger they are, the more stressed they are likely to become by endless hours of travel. There will be time later for the longer journeys, after all, the object of the family vacation is for everyone to have a fabulous time together.
