A recent study by the Travel Industry Association of America confirmed that there are 50 million people who live with a disability of some kind in the United States, with an additional 180 million worldwide.

The travel and hospitality industry realised that the combined annual incomes of those in the U.S. of $175 billion represented huge potential for  travel - if the industry could quickly gets its act together and make travel for these people an enriching and pleasant experience.

Six years ago in 2002 disabled people took 32 million journeys and spent more than $13.6 billion on travel.

It was estimated at the time that this spending could increase by more than 100% ifimproved travel amenities were introduced such as meet and greet programs at airports, priority seating on aircraft, and other public transport and improved access ways in hotels.

Most disabled travelers are known to take advantage of services and destinations that are known to be helpful in these areas. Many return repeatedly to those venues, destinations and carriers which have provided a good travel experience for them in the past.

Those who have, or are traveling with a person with special needs should not hesitate to state their special needs when arranging travel.
It should not be a factor that makes you hesitant to travel at all.

Most, if not all holiday service providers, airlines, hotels, campgrounds and attractions are usually very well equipped and prepared to accommodate unique requirements that will make your travel endeavor extremely memorable and pleasant.

Very seldom are there additional or hefty surcharges for special cabs and personalized service, assistance and specific needs and requirements you might have or face. Just ensure that all details have been taken care of in advance and that all providers have been notified at the time of booking, confirmation and re-confirmed just prior to arrival.

Find allies and friends amongst the front desk staff and managers that can give you the specialized customer attention you need and deserve at anytime you might require or request it.
Don’t be hesitant in asking for assistance, most people are more than willing to help in these enlightened days.

Happy Traveling
